I can highlight the way I look at software development, which is based on a now 10-year long ‘background track’ and hobby I named innercircles, which involves philosophy and methodology to gradually adopt a more evolutionary lifestyle. I won’t delve deeper into this (with some of you I have discussed innercircles to varying extent), but just mention that positive psychology plays a major role in it, and that I derive Social experience design concepts to align with this innercircles life philosophy.
So how does SX relate to PERMA? Well, it roughly totally aligns.
-
Positive emotions are attributes of Humanity - intrinsic value of Commons participation. Innercircles and SX aim to demonstrate the Power of Humanity and consider all these attributes the ‘currencies’ of value / service exchange.
-
Engagement is achieved wherever service exchange elicits positive emotions or relates to other virtuous traits relating to Humanity and Freedom, the other intrinsic value of Commons participation. Engagement then equates social interaction on the basis of intrinsic motivation.
-
Relationships correspond to the 2nd SX perspective (SX Pyramid of Perspectives model has 3 layers) where inter-personal relationships are modeled. This is called Social fabric in the sociosphere and Social graph in the technosphere. SX emphasizes human relationships i.e. they are not just arrows between entities in a diagram, but rich concepts where all the aspects of Humanity play a role.
-
Meaning is what we do things for, that which gives life purpose. In SX the 1st personal perspective focuses on individual needs. Here every person involved in SX (or ‘consuming social experiences’) also finds intrinsic motivation if they attach meaning to what they do. The emphasis on one’s own dreams and improving work, hobby, life balance is central in SX. Honoring this perspective is key to formation of a healthy commons.

Accomplishments relates to the pursuit of progress (however small) in the direction of realizing one’s own dreams, following ones passions. It also relates to reaping rewards and benefits as a result of proactive participation in collaborative activities. Accomplishments satisfy ones self-interest to collaborate with others, and this is key to hedonic peer production.
