I am generally anti-AI, in particular the mad and dangerous “AI craze” that has taken a grip on the tech world who are irresponsibly dumping highly disruptive technologies onto society, driven by hypercapitalist greed and power dynamics.

Nonetheless now and then I try out some AI to get a feel for where the technology stands. I found earlier that LLM’s, while dangerous and flawed in their implementation, can be helpful when doing brainstorming if you are knowledgeable enough on the subject to detect where the LLM goes off-track and starts to hallucintate / fabricate stuff. For where it is useful, one might consider the LLM as just a _handy tool to delve into prior human knowledge_.

This morning I asked a simple query to ChatGPT5, to collect me all the good ideas people had while [envisioning the future of social networking](https://discuss.coding.social/t/challenge-adopt-a-shared-technology-vision-for-the-fediverse/45). I asked:

> What is the future of social networking from the perspective of how people interact with other people. I am not interested in the role of AI in this regard.

And I got this response by ChatGPT5..

> If we look at the future of social networking purely through the lens of **how people interact with other people** (without emphasizing AI as a mediator), several trends and shifts stand out:
>
> * * *
>
> ### 1. **From Broadcast to Intimate Circles**
>
> - Large, open-ended platforms (like Facebook in its peak era) are giving way to **smaller, private, and purpose-driven spaces** —group chats, communities, circles, and servers.
> - Interaction is becoming less about broadcasting to hundreds or thousands of “friends” and more about **maintaining trust-based micro-networks**.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 2. **Ephemerality and Contextuality**
>
> - The appeal of disappearing content (Stories, ephemeral chat) reflects a shift toward **context-driven, low-pressure sharing**.
> - Future networks may lean into **temporal layers of interaction** , where what you say or show is relevant to a particular time, place, or shared event, and then dissolves.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 3. **Hybrid of Online and Offline Identities**
>
> - The line between online and offline interaction is thinning. Social platforms are increasingly serving as **extensions of physical social life** (coordinating events, documenting experiences, blending digital and face-to-face interaction).
> - Expect more **“social overlays”** on physical spaces—augmented or digital layers tied to real-world contexts.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 4. **Communities \> Individuals**
>
> - People are moving toward **affinity-based spaces** : fandoms, professional groups, hyperlocal communities, activist collectives.
> - Identity online is increasingly shaped by **what you belong to** , not just who you are individually.
> - Interaction becomes more **collective** , less tied to follower counts and more tied to shared goals or passions.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 5. **Asynchronous \> Synchronous**
>
> - While real-time interaction (video calls, live chats) will stay important, asynchronous communication (voice notes, threaded discussions, “slow” networks like forums reborn in new forms) is growing in value.
> - This reduces the pressure to always be “on” and allows for **more thoughtful, layered interaction**.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 6. **Fragmentation and Personal Control**
>
> - Instead of one giant network, people will maintain **multiple overlapping social graphs** —friends in one, colleagues in another, hobbyists in a third.
> - Future social networking may feel like **curating your own mosaic of spaces** rather than belonging to a single monolithic platform.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 7. **Trust, Authenticity, and Verification by Proximity**
>
> - Trust will likely become **proximity-based** : who you know personally, or who’s vouched for by a known contact.
> - People may value interactions that **signal authenticity through shared history or mutual context** , over polished presentations.
>
> * * *
>
> ### 8. **Return of Serendipity**
>
> - Despite fragmentation, there’s still a desire for **chance encounters** —the joy of discovery.
> - Future networks may provide ways to safely “bump into” people adjacent to your networks, without the overwhelming scale or toxicity of current feeds.
>
> * * *
>
> If we boil it down:
> The future of social networking (human-to-human) seems less about **mass exposure** and more about **curated intimacy** , **community belonging** , and **contextual, ephemeral, authentic interactions**.
>
> * * *
>
> Would you like me to sketch this as a kind of **timeline/progression** (from broadcast-era networks → private micro-networks → hybrid physical-digital communities), or would you prefer a **map of emerging modes of interaction** (e.g., intimacy, serendipity, community, ephemerality)?

This is an example where the LLM gives a far more nuanced and useful answer than most people when asked. On the fediverse for instance, six years after standardization of W3C ActivityPub we build “Rich Twitter” and painted ourselves in a corner by protocol decay. We are not even coming close to what is envisioned above.

Intriguing. 🤖 🤔
